What a waste! I’m talking the Moscow Circus. No big top. No sawdust, lions, or tigers. But Wow! What a sundown. First: the audience. Russian women, mostly grandmothers, dressed to fucking murder. Skin of one's teeth as shrill as an elephant’s eye. Ok. Not certainly. But I hadn’t seen this many tortuously teased, blown out, Dutch courage blondes in forty years. Unreal. And oh! The irridescent unhappy eye gloom, the spiky sterling heels and big-lifetime fur. My favorite? A deck-to the fullest cotton confectionery pink mink.

The “straightforward look” hasn’t actually made it as far as Brooklyn’s Brighton Littoral. No, sirree. Because it quite is another power out here. Not like Russia now. Doubtlessly not like Russia ever. But haunting in the way it clings to its old-fashioned station symbols, its distressful lout viands, and style. There wasn’t a tete- of English oral anywhere.
