When one thinks of Panama several images before you can say 'Jack Robinson' Maytime to thinking remember. Panama hats, the canal and offshore tax havens to name but a few. The more literary may of of John Le Carre’s ‘Clothier of Panama’, the espionage recounting made remarkable by the cover it inspired starring Wound Brosnan.

It is therefore relatively ironic that my first sympathy of Panama, the hat, is a misnomer. The Panama hat does not set up in Panama at all, but comes in experience from Ecuador. The large brimmed hats woven from the Toquilla introduce got their adopted name during the construction of the Panama Canal when the workers that were imported to perfect the labour, wore the hats to helper screen them from the seething sun. Theodore Roosevelt was even pictured in one whilst inspecting the industry on the canal in 1906.

The Panama Canal which was completed in 1914 is one of the centuries ardent engineering achievements. Built in two stages and by two countries, the canal took thirty three years to done achieve.
