Why are dresses made of taffeta?

I have a bridesmaid clothe and it's made of taffeta. And I hate it. I can't stand the fabric. It's heavy and wrinkles most and overall not impressive.

Can someone tell me just WHY taffeta is so popular with mingling-related dresses?
